This book is a guide to constructing over 20 Japanese features in manageable steps. You can complete each project in either one, two or three weekends.
The book is richly illustrated with high-quality photos and detailed drawings and illustrations. There is plenty of background information on why certain features are popular in Japanese gardens.
Early chapters cover the history of Japanese gardens, how to make the sketch plan, key design concepts, an overview of common materials used in the projects and the special features that the projects are comprised of.
Then there are ten one weekend projects, seven two weekend projects and seven three weekend projects.
The last few chapters cover:
- suitable plants to use, including some well-laid out charts with details of each plant
- pruning and training tips
- a few other notes on garden maintenance as it pertains to Japanese gardens
I would have liked to have seen actual photos of the completed projects, but my guess is that the author has not actually done each project himself. Which is fine as this would be expensive and require a lot of room.
This is a great resource for learning about Japanese gardens even if you don’t end up doing any of the projects. However once you have the book, you likely will be tempted to do some of the one weekend projects at least as most are not expensive, can be done quickly and at least start you off on the path to adding Japanese garden design elements to your outdoor space.
